I'm going to take you back to my 30 years along the Texas-Mexico border, where we had a huge percentage of internationally educated nurses, and nurses for whom English was not the primary language. Then I'm going to take you back to 1999 and the Institute of Medicine report "To Err is Human," which reported over 45,000 to 100,000 medical errors made in this country every year, primarily due to communication issues. And that's not necessarily just not understanding language, but it's communication and not having the right communication between all the various health care providers in our health care organizations.

- That's an excellent question again. So there are instances where the gender, like was asked, is used just due to the... in order to answer the question. So there are...on special research section in order to make it a little bit more realistic and looking like a medical record, there would've been occasional female, male, things like that. But when these items are going through our review processes and everything, they also will go through something called a sensitivity panel, which I believe was mentioned earlier.

In a rapidly changing landscape rich in technological innovation, regulators must also look to the future. Bringing out their crystal balls for the Institute’s final education session, NCSBN CEO Phil Dickison, PhD, RN, was joined by Hank Chaudry, DO, MACP, FRCP, president and CEO, Federation of State Medical Boards, and Josh Bolin, associate executive director, Federal Affairs and Strategy, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. While the topics focused on the biggest areas of change—artificial intelligence and workforce issues among them—it also focused on what would stay the same: the role of the regulator in promoting patient safety and public protection.

So we think we will be able to enhance the value the end user is going to see and received without really seeing a significant increase in cost. In relation to CE costs, it is quite varied, actually. I will say that. Where you working where you practice, you may have continuing medical education funds available to you. Your employer may provide a class A, the CE that we see as being costly in terms of per credit cost. So there's kind of a great variety in that. There certainly was a bit of an increased cost going from 40 to 60 CEUs, but as we increase the length of the certification cycle, we felt that was the right thing to do.
