If your ability is very low, we still can find you very easy items for you to answer. The CAT exams are so challenging for all test takers. If you take a CAT exam and then start to see difficult items, that means your ability estimate is getting higher and you may have a good chance to pass the exam. Every time you respond to an item, the computer re-estimates your ability based on all questions you have answered. And according to the updated ability estimate, the computer finds you the matching item for you to answer.

And then we included nurse anesthesia students as well. They had to have completed one year of clinical education and be in good standing at their program. So what we did was…this was very much a working group. We met together, we took the feedback from all of those different events, the focus groups, the surveys. We took all of that together and we signed into groups and developed what we thought would be the domains, the descriptors, the competencies for each domain, and the progression indicators.

Finally, our sensitivity panelists are instructed to flag any item that is patronizing, displaying, or indicative of offensively condescending manner such as calling a person sweetie or honey. Condescending language is language that implies that one is conscious of descending from a superior position, rank, or dignity. Offensive language is language that is disapproving to the moral sense, good taste, or is insulting such as a crude joke. Finally, we ask our panelists to flag any item that contains inflammatory content. For example, statements that support or refute one's political opinion.
