    Collapsing across country, the authors separately regressed decision-making scores on four demographic variables—age of nurse, years of experience, academic attainment, and medical cover. All four factors had reliable effects on decision scores; nurses scored higher with increasing age, with more experience, with more academic attainment, and with more medical cover. It is important to point out that there were significant correlations among the demographic variables, so it is unclear from the analyses run whether the variables measure a similar underlying construct—knowledge.

    And this year we had robust coalition building efforts with the Alaska Hospital and Healthcare Association, AHA leading the charge. This increased engagement resulted in over 75 organizations signing on in support of NLC legislation in the state. And this robust group of supporters has representation from medical associations, nursing schools, aging population, medical air transports, behavioral health payers, business and local government, public health, military, home and community services and post-acute care, hospitals, and tribal associations. And this all addresses the spectrum of Alaskan populace that would benefit from increased access to high quality nursing services.

    Aon, a leading global professional services firm, recently conducted a survey of 1,400 hospital across the U.S. and found results that mirror NCSBN’s own workforce study. Aon found that 62% of responding hospitals reported increased turnover among nurses. Additionally, hospitals reported that turnover happens most often among medical professionals with tenures of one to three years. In response, many health systems have prioritized investment in total rewards and support for workforce resiliency and mental health. The Aon survey found that 57% of reporting institutions are now offering enhanced behavioral health benefits (beyond traditional employee assistance programs or medical plans), which is up from 40% in 2022.
