Criminal Background Checks NCSBN recommends biometric-based criminal record checks on all nurse licensure applicants. These background checks should be compared to the applicant’s self-disclosure on the licensure application of misdemeanors, felonies and plea agreements required by the Uniform Licensure Requirements. If there are discrepancies between the background check and licensure application information, the applicant should be questioned regarding the discrepancy, and requested to provide a full explanation of the criminal record and a police report/certified court documents for each discrepancy.
