- Yeah, once we launch the NGN, the test plan categories will still be fulfilled in the way they are today or whatever the new test plan might look like for those test plan blueprint percentages. So yeah, those areas, those content areas, items written specifically for those content areas will still be distributed as they are today.

The main part of the publication is a detailed breakdown of candidate performance for 2019 and includes the pass rates by candidate type, degree type and country. In addition, the publication contains NCLEX historical data (e.g., pass rates, passing standards and volume) since CAT administration started in 1994. Ultimately, no single element of clinical judgment adequately predicts a nurse’s clinical judgment ability, rather it is the combination of all the elements that add validity and reliability to the measurement of a nurse’s clinical judgment ability. In short, having content knowledge does not always translate to having clinical judgment skills. Armed with this knowledge, NCSBN chose to move forward with what is now called the Next Generation NCLEX® (NGN) project. Bringing together experts from technology, content and measurement to imagine item prototypes that could measure clinical judgment, NCSBN worked on creating items that could be inserted as a Special Research Section in real candidate examinations.

I got many comments about how our nursing program at the College of Southern Maryland taught and prepared them well. Many said there were no surprises going in. Is there anything you’d like to share about your program’s experiences with the NGN thus far? Any advice you’d give nursing faculty about preparing students for the NGN? Schmidt: It’s not a time for panic. If the faculty are stressed about the NGN approach, the students are going to notice it. It’s best we recognize that, yes, it’s a different way of assessing performance, but we need to think about what we’ve been doing all along that’s been successful, and not get so stressed out over things like this.

Importantly, NCSBN is also providing timely and accurate information about the NGN to stakeholders through webinars, research papers, quarterly newsletters and other information resources. Testing candidates safely during the pandemic while keeping the NGN launch on track was by no means easy or a given this past year. However, we are pleased to report that all systems indeed point to “go” for a successful launch as we turn the corner into the final 24 months of the project.

For the second year in a row, however, attendees from warmer locales were spared the necessity of tracking down parkas and mittens, as NCSBN once again chose to hold the event virtually. Attendees gathered online Sept. 30 for a conference agenda focused on the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN). Last year, about 75% of the program featured NGN, and the response was very positive. This year we took the number up even higher. Highlights of staff presentations included a review of NGN case studies and “standalone“ items, discussion of NGN item types and partial credit scoring, and analysis of the NGN test design recently approved by NCSBN delegates at the 2021 Annual Meeting.
