This NCSBN sponsored conference provided a rare opportunity for nurse leaders with regulatory, practice and educational responsibilities to discuss ways to improve the quality of nursing home care. Attendees heard from national experts about evidence based strategies for: 1) implementing culture change, 2) improving the effectiveness of staff development, 3) implementing transition to practice strategies for novice nurses, and 4) developing safe environments for residents and staff. Through facilitated discussions, participants worked together to generate ideas for establishing a culture that embraces quality of care within the context of regulatory requirements.

Consequences, time constraints and risks cause someone to make decisions a certain way.” The CJM (see Figure 1) is complex but can be broken down into four levels. Imagine that a nurse walks into a client room and cues exist that must be first be recognized and then analyzed in order to care for the client properly. The nurse (1) forms hypotheses, (2) prioritizes them, (3) generates solutions and then (4) takes actions.

That's why this is so vital that we actually get in there, and make sure that our students are learning clinically, clinical-based education, conceptual-based education every day of lecture. So, again, you know, you can pursue that change in curriculum, you know, in some of those big movements, but again, dream big, start small, act now. Pick out 1 or 2 activities if nothing else, 2 or three 3 by 5 cards, find a buddy or 2 teaching that same cohort of students, and you all try it out. You all try it out for a while. Let's see here.
