Within the minimum-length exam, there are 52 standalone items and 3 case studies. Each case has 6 items for a total of 18 items that are scored to contribute to the pass-fail decision. The remaining 15 items are composed of pre-test items, the same number in the previous NCLEX exam. These 15 items can come in 1 of 3 combinations. First, all standalone items. Second, one case study which composes six items in addition to nine standalone items. Or third, 2 case studies, which is a total of 12 items in addition to 3 standalone items. This ensures that all candidates will have an equal number of unscored pre-test items in their exams.

The Passing Standard The NCSBN Board of Directors (BOD) reevaluates the passing standard once every three years. The criterion that the BOD uses to set the standard is the minimum level of ability required for safe and effective entry-level nursing practice. To assist the BOD in making this decision, they are provided with information on: 1. The results of a standard-setting exercise performed by a panel of experts with the assistance of psychometricians; 2. The historical record of the passing standard with summaries of the candidate performance associated with those standards; and 3.
