“It was very helpful to be connected with someone who understands the day-to-day business and can assist in giving you a background on how rules and statutes work, says Mitchell. “A lot of us face similar situations so it was very helpful to get Joe’s perspective on certain issues, like internationally educated nurses, licensees with criminal histories, or how we handle the licensing issue when there is a potential emergency and we may need the assistance of nurses from out of state. Joe was also very helpful when it came to showing me how to fill out reports for NCSBN, and he walked me through the resources on the NCSBN website.

I also talked with staffers to get hearings for bills and prepared testimony for an upcoming hearing. I gave presentations to nurses and students at a Minnesota Leaders in Nursing Day on the Hill and before the Governor’s Healthcare Reform Subcommittee. I participated in a state agency leadership activity to provide input on the State’s Master Plan for IT and worked with other health licensing boards’ executive officers to plan IT services for our collaborative group. I staffed a BON committee meeting, and prepared for two upcoming committee meetings and the next board meeting.

Susan is a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, clinically practices in endocrinology as an advanced practice registered nurse, and is a leader in the Nevada Advanced Practice Nurses Association.
