Rural hos- pitals must work much harder to keep their NLRNs and face competition from hospitals in larger cities, which offer higher salaries in a more enticing place to live. Transition programs in rural hospitals have been reported to increase retention.26 If not Magnet designated, small hospitals in urban areas had the best retention rate. There are several potential explanations for this unique finding. First, small hospitals in urban areas may be specialty hospitals with a narrower focus in which NLRNs become comfortable sooner.
