Schowalter, MEd, RN, a founding “mother” of the organization and nursing regulatory pioneer who passed away on May, 26, 2025. Her contributions to regulation and public protection are profound. At a 1977 meeting of the American Nurses Association Council of State Boards of Nursing, Schowalter made the motion to form a task force to study the reorganization of the ANA Council of State Boards of Nursing, which led to the founding of NCSBN.

The “National Prelicensure RN Study: Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on Nursing Education” is currently underway at 55 nursing education sites across 26 U.S. states.
