Schwartz, MS, Director, Test Development, Examinations, NCSBN In this presentation, I'll review these new modifications, comparing and contrasting them with prior instances of the exam. The exam changes fall into six categories, each of which will be explained through its own slide. The return of pretest items, an increased number of items on each exam, the return of the NGN Special Research Section to the RN exam, the introduction of the NGN Special Research Section to the PN exam, the removal of the NCLEX tutorial from the exams, and increased testing time made available to candidates. We'll begin with the return of pretest items.

So, one of our goals was to keep the testing time comparable to what it is today and we've met that goal. So, all of these test design goals that we set out for are goals that we've been able to accomplish, and you'll see how we accomplish those in the next few slides. So, one of the things that you'll notice with the new NGN or the new item types, as I just said, all of the item types can be seen on the NCLEX today will continue to be seen on the NGN. So the item types you see today will continue to be seen tomorrow. However, in addition, there will be a number of new item types that you see here on the screen.

Some of the objectives of this session will be sort of a high-level understanding of what the Next Generation NCLEX Test Design will look like. And we'll talk about it at a high level but then we'll also spend some time towards the end being much more specific about the test design. We'll talk about both what's staying the same between the NCLEX today and the NGN in the future, and what's changing. And then we'll go through a very specific step- by-step process of showing you the overall structure of the NGN exam. Now, some of the things that we'll be talking about today will be brand new. You'll be the first persons to hear about, like, for instance, the new test design.

That is part of Generate Solutions of the NCJMM. - Okay. And Lisa, I'm going to keep you on the mic. For the Extended Multiple Response or Select All That Apply within the NGN, is there a minimum number of response options? - Okay, so for the multiple response, Select All That Apply for NGN, that also applies to NCLEX as well, and the answer for that is at least one option, meaning one key must be selected for the candidate to proceed through the exam. - Okay.

All rights reserved. 3 new item types as discussed earlier. Candidates will continue to have up to five hours to complete the exam. And the exam will continue to be administered as a variable length CAT, but will be extended to score polytomous items. As was discussed earlier, the NGN will allow for items for partial understanding, rather than solely as all right or all wrong. The model chosen will allow for the continued use of the NCLEX scale. So, scores will be comparable pre and post-NGN. The specific model that we'll be using will be the partial credit model.
