Likewise, the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Future of Nursing report (IOM, 2011) made a recommendation (key message number two) that “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression” (p. 163). More specifically, it recommends that by 2020 the proportion of baccalaureate degree nurses should be 80 percent (IOM, 2011), although in 2013 the percentage of first-time, U.S. educated baccalaureate graduates t ...

The sample selected for this study was proportionally equivalent to the population of U.S. Nurse Licensees. The survey respondents were not substantially different from the population as estimated from the number of active licenses reported in the 2003 Nurse Licensee Volume and NCLEX Examination Statistics (NCSBN, 2005). A total of 4,777 surveys were returned and scanned for an adjusted return rate of 24.5%. The dataset was then fur- ther cleaned by excluding surveys that did not meet two additional quality control criteria: at least 25.0% of the survey was completed and the respondent was currently employed as an RN.

There's not as many experts around. There's not as many people to call on. And so, I think, it's not that I don't think that they're academically prepared well, and I will just say that, having looked at the second and third quarters of the next generation NCLEX that was launched April 1st, we had eight schools on probation for not meeting our 80% mark. We now have nine schools for the third quarter, all of which were in those eight that had 100% pass rate on the next generation NCLEX, and 29 of our 31 schools all met the 80% benchmark and they're doing really well on that test.

At the end of the study, there were no statistically significant differences in clinical competency as assessed by the clinical preceptors and instructors, no significant differences in comprehensive nursing knowledge assessments and there were no statistically significant difference in NCLEX pass rates among the three study groups. In 2014, prior to the release of the results from the National Simulation Study, we at NCSBN, and this was led by Jennifer, this was Jennifer Hayden's idea, so this brings the conference full course, because we had the keynote address from Jennifer at the start and feel this is following up with an idea that Jennifer had that she wanted to track, what was the state of regulation now and what would it look like in the future.
