While the standard MCQ items have traditionally required about a minute on average for the examinee to respond, the MR items require approxi- mately 1 to 1.5 minutes, the FBS items require almost 2 minutes on average, and the FBC items require 2.5 to 3 minutes on average. However, it should be noted that the average response time for the MCQ calculation items for the RN examination is about 3 minutes on average, which is similar to the innovative FBC items. Based on the last two columns of Table 1, the number and percentage of items failing the pretest screening, it appears that the survival rate for the new item types is at least as good, and may be better, than the survival rate for the standard MCQ item types.

The first sec- tion contained demographic questions including the average number of CE contact hours that the participants earned each year regardless of whether or not their juris- diction required it. Section 2 asked about their work environment. Section 3 asked about their performance of nursing activities using three separate questions and scales. First, the participants were asked (“Y Yes” or “N No”) if the activity was part of core RN practice. Next, participants were asked to provide a rating about the importance of each activity for RN practice considering client safety using a scale of “1 Not Important,” “2 Somewhat Important,” “3 Important,” and “4 Extremely Important.”

User testing was then conducted, in which the set of prototype items was adminis- tered to a small sample of examinees representative of the target examinee population. User testing was conducted in 3 iterative stages. The first iteration in- cluded 2 students from a bachelor’s degree program, the second included 1 student from a bachelor’s program, and the third included 3 students from an associate’s degree program. Four of the 6 students were women, and 2 were men.

Systematic reviews consider the strength of the evidence for a particular strategy. Therefore, in this review the levels of evidence, or hierarchies of the studies, are identified. There are several ways that researchers classify research studies. One system is to grade the studies on a rating of I to V. Level I studies are large randomized control trials (RCTs); level II studies are RCTs with 50 subjects or fewer; level III are smaller cohort or case-control and cohort studies; level IV evidence come from case reports and low-level case-control and cohort studies; finally, level V is expert or consensus based on experience, physiology or biological principles.
