We are now a year into CARA, which addressed NP prescribers over a five-year timeframe. We do not yet have sufficient numbers of trained medication-assisted prescribers for substance use disorder. Adjustments are needed, and have been proposed. HR 3692 was introduced on September 7, 2017. It seeks to remove the time limitation on the addition of NPs as MAT prescribers while adding the other APRN roles. It would do this by changing the Controlled Substance Act to include these roles as qualifying providers, without a timeline.

Opioid Epidemic. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): FDA’s response to the opioid epidemic includes: 1) Expanding the use of advisory committees; 2) Developing warnings and safety information to immediate-release (IR) opioid labeling; 3) Strengthening post-market requirements; 4) Updating Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Program; 5) Expanding access to abuse-deterrent formulations (ADFs) to discourage abuse; 6) Supporting better treatment; and 7) Reassessing the risk-benefit approval framework for opioid use (FDA, 2018a).
