We have to identify who they are very early on and help to grow them as leaders within our organization. The EO is in a unique position. He or she is essentially an unofficial mentor within their own state to their staff, to their own board members, whether they're in an official mentoring relationship within the National Council or not. The EO is the one person who can early on help identify future leaders, encourage them to apply to be on committees, encourage them to attend mid-year meetings, annual meetings, and participate in the life of the council.
