But when the hospital started to flood, there was an issue. The generators failed. They couldn't have staff walking through several feet of water. They had to get patients out. Three major hospitals closed in New Jersey during this time—Jersey City Medical Center, Palisades Medical Center, Hoboken Medical Center. These are large hospitals. Patients had to be put somewhere. There is worldwide agreement by nurse leaders that there is a direct relationship between safe patient care and the quality of nursing programs (Gloor, 2001; ICN, 1997). This is particularly important for boards of nursing since their mission is to protect the public. And, you know, modeling the way, inspiring the vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart, those are all the five precepts of that leadership challenge. So, what we did at the university where I am, I'm at a medical center, so we kind of got a nice little collaboration with our practice partners already. But what we have done, we just went ahead and ate that whole elephant. And did the concept-based curriculum at the same time that we did the, yeah, competency.

We know that we can't guarantee the same experiences for all our students, but with simulation, I can guarantee that you will take care of a person with this condition. You will see a birth. You will be able to, let's say, take care of a high-acuity medical condition like anaphylaxis that you probably won't get to see in the clinical practice, but we'll have that opportunity for our learners in simulation. So those are the unique values of using simulation. So what does the research say on simulation and clinical judgment?
