Phase I will establish internal validity of the model and will be conducted in hospitals with registered nurses (RNs). Phase II will establish external validity (or generalizability) and will be conducted with licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) in a variety of settings, as well as with RNs who take their first jobs in settings other than hospitals (e.g., long-term care, community facilities, correctional facilities, schools). There will be three states selected to take part in the study.

So we've been battling, what do we do to have a special outreach to LPNs or LVNs? Do you have any suggestions in that area? - We've not targeted the LPNs separate from the RNs. What would be good is to go to the annual LPN Association meetings. They're not quite as robust with the Alabama State Nurses Association, but they do have two association meetings annually. So that would be a suggestion of one place to look for the LPNs to see if…I usually speak at one of their events annually so we could target VDAP with that.

So, RNs expire April 30th of odd-numbered years. APRNs are recognized and we set the expiration date whichever is sooner, either their national certifying body expiration date or April 30th because we're like most states you have to have an RN license to have APRN recognition. And then LPN license expire even-numbered years, May 31st. I would love nothing more to do than what some of you do that have two-year renewals that expire on birth month but there's lots of political reasons why that doesn't happen in our state. So, you know, I'm faced with that.

Groundbreaking, Comprehensive, Vital: The National Nursing Guidelines for Medical Marijuana | NCSBN
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. The committee was charged with developing model guidelines for the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) certification of a qualifying condition under state requirements, model guidelines for APRN, registered nurse (RN), and licensed practical nurse (LPN) care of patients using marijuana, recommendations for marijuana-specific curriculum content in APRN education programs, recommendations for marijuana-specific curriculum content in RN and LPN education programs, and model guidelines for assessing safeness to practice of licensees who use marijuana.

Check out www.learningextg.com for this and other educational products from NCSBN. Education Can Decrease Nursing Errors NCSBN’s Research Services recently found that the quality of nursing education impacts errors made in entry-level practice. A 2002 survey of newly licensed RNs and LPN/VNs demonstrated that 49% of the RNs and 41% of the LPN/VNs had been involved in errors within their first months of practice. The new nurses rated their educational preparation for 19 practice setting issues, and were significantly less likely to be involved with errors when they reported adequate education for 6 crucial areas of practice.
