The scoring rule applies to items that have tightly paired information, and having a full understanding of the concept requires justification through a rationale. In the simplest form, you can think of this as the nurse must do x because of y. And to establish competency and earn a point, examinees must know both x and y. The Rationale Scoring Rules apply to the drop-down rationale item types. Here, the tightly paired information is risk of developing x as evidenced by y. Examinees must correctly identify both options in order to earn a full credit of one point.
