Workforce-Symposium-Report.pdf
Employers and policymakers cannot solve this issue by being reactive and instead need to focus time and energy on being proactive and allotting resources accordingly. Prevention is key to fighting this pervasive feeling and prevention begins with recognizing issues. • Create local and state-level programs. Widespread mandatory training, accessible programs, and protocols for when a nurse may be at risk for self-harm are essential for a healthy workforce. Then, when concerning behaviors arise, there is a plan on how to respond and move forward. These programs should be open for self-referral along with recommendations from colleagues, peers and supervisors.

I don't know if you caught the story I mentioned in my session, it might have been a time where we were having a little technical issue, but I was on a faculty where one person just lectured and spoon-fed and gave them study guides, and then the rest of us were trying to promote thinking and action, and she got great evaluations, and we didn't get very good evaluations. And once she left and the students realized that this is college, this is thinking, you're going to be out there makin ...

How do we transition them through their first few years when they lack confidence, when there’s a lot of stimulation in the real world, and when there are a lot more things to think about? We need to make sure we can help these new graduate nurses transition to practice effectively. I would just say, the intentionality of integrating a clinical judgment model was really important for our nursing program because when we used a clinical judgment model as our structure, we were able to align all the other pieces.

And then some of the qualitative data that was obtained from the evaluation had a couple of quotes that are listed here, relating to collaboration, concern for what happens when the GNE money is no longer there, some of the variations in which preceptor incentives actually take place, the relationships with the school of nursing and the project didn't...I think worked to strengthen the academic practice partnerships in the selected sites.

ProfessionalBoundaries_Complete.pdf
Boundary crossings are brief excursions across professional lines of behavior that may be inadvertent, thoughtless or even purposeful, while attempting to meet a special therapeutic need of the patient. Boundary crossings can result in a return to established boundaries, but should be evaluated by the nurse for potential adverse patient consequences and implications. Repeated boundary crossings should be avoided. Boundary violations can result when there is confusion between th ...

You know, really kind of from the word go, you know, what makes this escalate from essentially internal remediation, you know, to something that we need to involve external regulators. And then, facility culture. so facility culture, again, being really that tougher nut. So there might be a culture oftentimes, when we did dig into this, there were a couple questions that we wanted to use for kind of context for this. In somewhat of a disheartening finding, we did find about almost 35% to 40%of respondents who said the facility culture was an issue, they said that their facility actually deemed all events, all adverse events as unreported.

I think, you know, drawing on some of the research that was done through the TERCAP project and through a pilot that we continued here in Texas with TERCAP data, what we see is that even nurses who have been out of school for years, they tend to be at higher risk for a practice breakdown that results in discipline when they change employment settings or change practice areas. So I don't believe I've seen anything that would lead me to believe that additional formal education is needed. - Okay. Well, is there anything else you would like to tell the participants today?

This database is the government of Canada’s terminology and linguistic data bank. This standardized data bank holds several million French/English equivalents to facilitate consistent translation of the official languages of Canada. Due to the specificity of the nursing profession, there are occasions when no translation exists in the Termium Plus® database for some nursing and/or healthcare terminology. In those instances, NCSBN utilizes an alternate approach to obtain a comprehensible term. Research is conducted using credible sources to obtain an acceptable translation.
