The knowledge categories were included in the 2003 LPN/VN Practice Analysis survey with their definitions. Survey respondents were asked to provide two ratings for each knowledge category: importance of the knowledge category to the work they performed in their nurse practice settings on a scale of 0 to 3, with 3 equaling very important; and utilization of the knowledge on a scale of 0 (I do not use the knowledge), 1 (I recognize/recall the knowledge) and 2 (I apply/ interpret/analyze the knowledge).

(NCSBN) | 2009 12 REMEDIATION OUTCOMES settings have significant impacts on the recidivism rate, and it is clear that there were a high percentage of disciplined LPN/VNs who worked in long-term care facilities, recidivism rates of LPN/VNs and RNs who were employed by long-term care facilities were compared. Further analysis revealed a compara- tively higher recidivism rate for the LPN/VNs (40.0%) than that of the RNs (27.9%), but the difference was statistically insignificant ( 2=2.03, df=1, P=.11).

Throughout its 27-year history NCSBN has advanced the position that nurses must remain competent throughout their professional careers and spearheaded an initiative to develop an assessment instrument to measure continued competence of RNs and licensed practical and vocational nurses (LPN/VNs). Recently initiated practice analysis studies: one for post entry-level RNs and one for post entry-level LPN/VNs are designed to describe post entry-level nursing practice and delineate the interface between entry-level practice and continued competence in practice.

The president stated that while the membership as a whole was in Chapter One · Early Regulation 21 favor of a board made up of nurses, the Legislative Committee “saw fit to change the language to delete the board of nurse examiners and substitute the board of medical examiners” on advice of attorneys. Palmer responded with the following: “Better to be ten years in getting a good bill than to have to accept one like that of Iowa…The bill remains a most unfortunate measure.”32 An improved bill was finally enacted in Iowa in 1907. In 1904, the nurses in Massachusetts began a lengthy struggle to obtain a law for the registration of nurses in that state.
