My first dip of my toe into school nursing was in rural South Dakota. We'll talk a little bit more about rural later on, where I drove 100 miles a day just to complete all the tasks that I needed to complete. And then we moved to, in South Dakota, our largest urban center, a city of about 200,000 and the school district about 25,000. So now I was going to have three buildings, and I was like, "Oh my gosh, I'm so excited not to have to drive as much as I was driving before."

So I did want to speak to that briefly. And also, I think any of these areas and these challenges, I think they're not insurmountable. They point to opportunities for partnership and collaboration, and to look at new ways of solutioning in some of these areas.

Event 2024 NCSBN Annual Meeting More info: https://www.ncsbn.org/past-event/2024-ncsbn-annual-meeting Presenter Alicia Byrd, RN, Director, Member Engagement, NCSBN Good morning, everybody. While we're waiting for the election results, right, I just wanted to raise the energy in the room, but I think I already did. I thought perhaps maybe it might be just a little bit thick or a little dense, but I think that the energy is okay. I was asked to introduce myself. So for those of you who don't know me, my name is Alicia Byrd.

And we wanted to do that, but we also wanted to make sure that all the voices were heard, and I explained the talk that it was a multidisciplinary team but we did have very different perspectives, as well. Actually, when we look back at some of our groups I mentioned, I could pick people in our research team who had those different views and those different positions.

If you have a feeling that you've got a thought contrary to what I'm suggesting, it's okay to say that. I don't bite. I'm not mean, and I encourage discussion and disagreement. The other is our conversation and all of your conversations should be about experience, not experts. I love what I do. I think I'm very good at what I do, but I don't understand the reality that you work in.

All rights reserved. 2 And then as I mentioned today, I'm very, very confident I will have more time for questions because I think I stopped with like 30 seconds yesterday. So, I'm not even sure that qualifies as a question-and- answer period. But I do hope to give you the opportunity to ask any questions or necessary clarification, whatnot.

You can imagine why he was cuffed with the nature of these operations, right? What I don't know as the nurse if there are any other arrests or things going on. I just know that this is someone that came in and he has been arrested for this purpose or that charge at that moment, but he is still my patient and I still need to deliver the same type of care that I would as a registered nurse to any patient.

All rights reserved. 8 - I think predominantly, we didn't need that help, I suppose. I think from our workforce perspective, we were very lucky. We had an adequate workforce. I mean, so just to caveat that, I know that there are nurses and midwives out there who would be very fatigued at the moment and particularly, again, going back to that period in Victoria, you know, they were under extreme stress.
