Their analysis indicated that standardized remediation may be effective in preventing recidivism. An older study reported recidivism, within 5 years, could be as high as 26% to 39%. And a second key concept in the literature found both in nursing and medicine reported that minimal recidivism occurs following individualized remedial education interventions. And then in looking at the best strategies to remediate nursing practice, of course, a high fidelity simulation is one that is considered and the research shows that it has been found to be effective in teaching practicing nurses as well as pre-licensure nursing students.

Also unlike other health professions, nursing has multiple points of entry and exit, including LPN/VN (diploma or associate degree), diploma, associate degree and baccalaureate or master’s educated RNs. Considering this last point, if nursing is to move to 80 percent baccalaureate educated nurses by 2020 as recommended by the IOM’s Future of Nursing report (Committee, 2011), then the accreditation of programs will be an important factor for promoting educational mobility.

The robust reporting systems developed between the FSMB and state medical boards during their century-long relationship helps ensure the data residing in the PDC is highly accurate and comprehensive. This information is also available to consumers via the FSMB’s free physician-search portal, DocInfo, located at www.docinfo.org. The FSMB’s Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS) establishes a permanent repository of primary- source verified credentials for physicians and physician assistants, saving duplicative efforts by state medical boards.

What type of policies laws do we need to enact? What do you want to tell your policymakers, your legislators at the state level? - I would say that I lead a health system that is across 26 states. And so, I regularly am dealing with needing to look at every single state's laws and regulations before I can explore, for instance, an innovative care delivery model and enacting that in different places. I have to figure out how a nursing assistant is not allowed to work in the hospital in some states or an LPN is not allowed to do a whole set of patient care in this state and that state, but they can in another state.

Alexander points to the final statement in the study report: “The most significant finding of this study is the effectiveness of the two types of education methods: traditional clinical and simulation experiences. In both environments, when structure, an adequately prepared faculty with appropriate resources, dedication, foresight and vision are incorporated into the prelicensure nursing program, excellent outcomes are achieved.”
