    The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. Leveraging more than 4,000 course observations collected from fall 2020 to spring 2022, this study illuminates the breadth, scale and ever-evolving nature of prelicensure RN programs’ efforts to maintain the continuity of nursing students’ education during the public health crisis. More about Nicole K. Ozturk, PhD, MA Richard Smiley, MS, MA Senior Statistician, Research Richard has been a member of the Research Department for over 20 years. He earned a Master of Science in Statistics from the University of Chicago and a Master of Arts in Demography from Georgetown University. One of Richard’s most notable research contributions is the landmark  NCSBN National Simulation Study  which explored the role and outcomes of simulation in prelicensure clinical nursing education.

  • Simulation Study | NCSBN

    The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide an organization through which boards of nursing act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting the public health, safety and welfare, including the development of licensing examinations in nursing. The NCSBN National Simulation Study was conducted in three phases. Phase I involved a national survey of simulation use in pre-licensure nursing programs. Phase II was a randomized, controlled study examining the outcomes of various amounts of simulation to replace a portion of the hours spent in traditional clinical settings. Phase III was a longitudinal study that followed the nurse graduates into their clinical practice as new registered nurses.

Who is Affected? Substance Use Disorder can affect anyone regardless of age, occupation, economic circumstances, ethnic background or gender. It is a progressive and chronic disease, but also one that can be successfully treated. However, published best medical practices cannot alone combat the Substance Use Disorder or the opioid public health epidemic. Only a multifaceted approach, including prescribers, regulatory authorities, pharmaceutical companies, employers, legislators, law enforcement, and the federal government has a chance at turning the tide of Substance Use Disorder and the opioid-related morbidity and mortality.
