What You Need to Know: Federal/Military Nurses and Spouses Federal, Veterans Administration, Military and Indian Health Services Nurses The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows a nurse (registered nurses [RNs] and licensed practical/ vocational nurses [LPN/VNs]) to have one multistate license in the primary state of residence (PSOR or the home state) and to practice in other compact states (remote states), while subject to each state’s practice laws. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are not included in the NLC.

What is the NLC? • The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/VN) to possess a multistate license, which permits practice in both the home state and other compact states, while maintaining a primary state of residence (PSOR). • A multistate license permits practice (physically and virtually) across state lines in all NLC states. A nurse who does not meet the uniform licensure requirements is not eligible for a multistate license.
